Last night I did my Ice Breaker speech to my local Toastmasters club. For those of you not familiar with Toastmasters, it’s a place where people who are looking to improve their speaking and leadership skills come together to learn and practice those two arts. The Ice Breaker is the first speech that anyone who’s joined Toastmasters has to make. In that speech, I covered some of the highlights of my life’s journey which I put in three categories: Gifts, Choices and Commitments. For the next few weeks and months, I will share something about my life on each of those areas and would also love to hear about the gifts, choices and commitments that have changed the trajectory of your life.
This week we’re focusing on “Gifts”. What are some of the gifts that you’re most grateful for. For me it is Life, Health and Family.
Life and Health:
The first gift I’m grateful for is Life and Health. My mother and father were not planning on having any more children after their 4th child. But I am grateful that the Grand Overall Designer saw it fit for me to be born and experience an earthly journey – which I should say so far is an awesome journey. As a bonus, He makes it possible for me to have that experience in a healthy body.
Last night after the Toastmasters meeting, I stopped by a rehabilitation center to see my tenant who’s only 56 years old but has gone through so much physical pain (Heart Problems, Diabetes, Kidney Failure and an Amputated Foot). While he is in good spirit, but I know he’s in pain. Seeing him maximized the impact of the message from the speech on me. And so, I am most grateful to the Grand Overall Designer for life and a healthy body to continue to experience all that He has for me while on earth.
Another gift that I’m most grateful for in my life is a supportive family. I don’t remember one day when a member of my family told me that I couldn’t do something because they believed I wasn’t able to. They’ve always believed in me. The only thing they’ve always done is remind me of who I am (my values) and where I come from (my past / my roots).
Specifically, I’m grateful for:
- My father who sacrificed over a decade of his time with family to work hard to bring my family and I to the US. I understand his sacrifice because I know how it feels to be away from the ones you love (your spouse and kids).
- My mother who gave her all and did everything she could to care for the family while my father was across the ocean for over a decade.
- My brother (Isaac) who worked hard and long hours while in school to help take care of the family so that I wouldn’t have to worry about anything but my education and advancement.
Whoever you and no matter where you are in life you’ve had help getting there. For me to be where I am today is simply because I’m standing on the shoulders of giants – giants like my father, my mother and my brother who selflessly made many sacrifices. I’m blessed and honored to have them in my life.
So, I’m grateful for life, health and family. What gifts in your life that you’re most grateful for and why? Please share with us in the comments section below.
